Drive Block Progression
with Brian Hughes,
C.W. Post College Assistant Coach/Offensive Coordinator

This presentation is a valuable tool for teaching drive block progression. According to Coach Hughes, the answer to successful blocking is teaching the progression of skills needed "in the trenches". The mental approach to playing on the line, teamed with skills, is the theme of this excellent DVD. Hughes' "backfield forward" concept teaches players to execute based on what the backfield is doing. Many of the fundamentals are applicable in the man blocking progression as well as the zone progression. The steps taught are lead step, flat step and the drop step. Hughes starts the progression by analyzing the stance. Hand placement and balance help to teach the two-point stance, followed by "One step" progression, followed by two steps with one or two commands. Firm foot, the fourth step, drives the right knee down to the ground and the progression concludes with the full go - a combination of all steps into live action. Finishing the block is taught in several ways and extends the block progression. The same approach is taken to teaching down blocks, cut off blocks and blocking people in space and how that translates into zone combinations. Analysis of each step includes technique, teaching points and video drill work. Excellent insight and instruction! 38 minutes. 2006. DVD.

Zone Read Play
with Brian Hughes,
C.W. Post College Assistant Coach/Offensive Coordinator

This DVD captures zone blocking combinations derived from the drive block progression and how the zone read play is installed. The zone read play is a double option play that has evolved through the years. The C.W. Post staff has gone to zone plays because of multiple defensive fronts and formations. The zone concept also provides a solid foundation for offensive lineman, and allows for multiple backfield alignments. The last advantage is that by teaching drive blocking, every scheme is covered against every front. The theory is that by making the defense slide horizontally creates creases vertically. Two consistencies are evident in this scheme. One, the back must cross the face of the quarterback, and the aiming point adjusts to tighter to the butt of the guard. After snap from center, the quarterback flips his hips and establishes the line of vision to the defender outside the tackle. The running back aligns himself to the angle of the attack after dropping a heel for timing. The offensive line has simple rules for the zone read. Against a 4-2 defense, the covered/uncovered rule comes into play. The read for the quarterback will be determined after the snap when facing the 3-3 defense. Coach Hughes uses practice footage to demonstrate the footwork and fundamentals needed. Zone block progression includes head up, inside and outside before adding the linebacker in. Drills are run 2-on-1 or 2-on-2 to stress these techniques. These zone combo drills work on technique as well as the scheme used. The zone read play game tape helps you to see the scheme in game action. This DVD combines philosophy, technique and game footage to increase your knowledge of the zone read play. By applying the teaching on this presentation you can quickly elevate the level of your offensive play. 39 minutes. 2006. DVD.

The Zone Option Package
with Brian Hughes,
C.W. Post College Assistant Coach/Offensive Coordinator

The zone option is the focus of this DVD and incorporates the zone read and blocking techniques. The C.W. Post staff favors the zone option because it accounts for the defensive end the same way the zone read does, and forces defenses to play assignment football instead of blitzing. By using motion, this scheme forces defenses to play balanced. Blocking rules are exactly the same, except for the backside tackle. Other benefits are a valid run threat from a no back position, offers blitz protection, allows faster receivers to get the ball is space and includes many explosive run and pass options. Drills work on linemen running to the linebacker level to block and running with a wide base prior to contact. A key piece in the progression of teaching zone option is the zone option pass. After identifying key positions of offense, Hughes demonstrates the potential of this play by showing game footage. The zone counter and the shovel option are the final compliments to the zone option package. This entire package is expertly presented in this DVD and can benefit your option offense tremendously! 50 minutes. 2006. DVD.

Becoming a Champion Offensive Lineman
with Ed Thomas,
Aplington-Parkersburg HS (IA) Head Coach,
'93 & '01 State Champions,
Four Thomas-coached players (Casey Wiegmann, Jared DeVries, Aaron Kampman and Brad Meester) are NFL Lineman

Recipient of the NFL's 2006 High School Coach-of-the-Year Award

In his illustrious 31-year career, Coach Thomas has captured two state championships and has propelled four of his players into the NFL as lineman. The drills and techniques presented on this DVD will help athletes develop into dominant offensive lineman. The key to successful offensive line play starts with the stance. Thomas teaches toe to instep stagger with hands on knees and an arched back. A player's vision should be 5 yards downfield with his eyes up. Next is the forearm lift where players block from the tip of the elbow to the ear hole. Thomas believes the most important thing in line play is getting off the ball and getting the first proper step. He demonstrates the 6-Point Explosion Drill to help develop that first step. Other drills focus on taking on linebackers, a proper base, selling out and more. Trap block progression is something taught uniquely by Coach Thomas. The first step is to the back tip of the football with the aiming point at the thigh of the defender. This DVD concludes with the Reverse Head and Shoulder Block and 5-man shoots. The road to the NFL has gone through the teaching of Coach Thomas. The teaching and detail in this presentation are witness to his commitment to execution of fundamentals on the football field. 75 minutes. 2006. DVD.
