Oklahoma University Head Coach Patty Gasso has an outstanding history of achievement, including a WCWS Championship, membership in the National Fastpitch Coaches Hall of Fame, 6 Big 12 Coach of the Year Awards and over 1,000 career victories! Many coaches would agree when she says that defense wins championships. In this DVD, Coach Gasso discusses the mindset for aggressive defense, as well as the strategies and drills that have helped her teams win two NCAA National Championships. In this presentation she shares her knowledge in the areas of bunt and slap defense, defending the steal, first and third situations, and touches on relays.
Bunt and Slap Defense - The defense can best prepare if it knows what to expect from an offense. Coach Gasso starts her presentation by explaining some different defensive approaches that she uses with a runner at first base, which is a common bunting scenario. Coach Gasso explains how her team employs bunt defense, and she has her players demonstrate coverage. She also talks about defending against slappers and bunt coverage with multiple runners on base, situations that can place a lot pressure on the defense to execute.
Steal - With one or more runners on base, some offenses will try to challenge the catcher by stealing bases in order to advance runners, rather than give the defense an out with a bunt. Coach Gasso shows how to guard against the steal, using communication between the fielders and different steal specific coverage. A steal attempt requires a defense to be fast and accurate, so knowing how to anticipate steals and position the defense accordingly is very important.
Double Plays - Coach Gasso believes in an aggressive defensive approach with fielders playing to get the lead out when runners are on base. This allows for double plays. Her players demonstrate how to turn double plays from all positions on the field. A defense that can convert a double play with runners on base has a much better chance at getting out of the situation without giving up any runs.
First and Third Situations - First and third situations can put pressure on a defense to execute because players must make quick decisions and accurate throws. Although these situations don't happen very often, Coach Gasso places an emphasis on them. If they are not handled correctly, the offense can score without the batter ever touching the ball. She has six options for defensive plays that she runs against a first and third situation. See her defense demonstrate the plays, while she offers advice on when to use each option.
Relays - A good relay can get the ball from the outfield to the infield very quickly, preventing an offense from advancing and scoring. Coach Gasso's team demonstrates several different ways to handle relays depending on where the ball is hit, and she offers advice on how to set up the cut-offs.
Although offense may be a focal point of the game of softball for many, a great defense can help neutralize any opponent's offense. If an opponent can't score then they can't win. Learn how to create a lock down defense with Coach Gasso's tested methods. 54 minutes. 2014.
