The middle distance program was at the heart of Coach Marty Stern's many years of unprecedented success at Villanova. In Part 1, Stern shares his ideas and techniques for stretching and warm-up and presents his training methodology for middle distance runners. In Part 1 of this three-part presentation, Marty Stern shares his weekly routine for training the distance runner. Although much of the training is focused on Tuesdays ("quality day"), Stern lays out recommendations for each day of the week. Stern includes five specific "Tuesday" workouts. He also shares the importance of alternative workouts such as water running and stationary bike training. In Part 2, Coach Stern reviews the different distance events and offers race strategy for the runner and race strategies for coaching the distance events. In Part 3, "Building and Improving Your Team," Stern shares his experience and strategies for recruiting students, marketing and getting publicity for your program, and the importance of a coach's positive influence upon the lives of young people. Whether it is off-season, pre-season, or in the competitive phase of the season, Marty Stern centers his Cross Country training philosophy on keeping runners healthy! Coach Stern discusses pre-season strategies, beginning in early July with a gradual progression of both mileage and frequency and then discusses the Early Season Phase where he introduces his "patented" weekly training plan that centers on a high stress/high quality Tuesday workout. He provides six specific Tuesday workout prescriptions that produce the desired results of hard quality running. For the other days of the week, Stern offers general concepts as well as specific workout suggestions, including tips and ideas for maintaining a healthy team. In addition, he offers strategies for positive pack running, an essential element of a successful Cross Country team.
